Sharing an early Sunday morning breakfast
Sharing an early Sunday morning breakfast at separate tables
two men sat at separate tables
in the front window of Proof Bakery
each faced the same direction
like passengers on a public bus
the grizzly man in the black and plaid flannel shirt
sat nearest the door.
before sipping his coffee, he dropped his head and prayed
a prayer as long as his salt and pepper beard
which nearly reached his russet leather belt--
no "bless this mess" prayer
but a conversation, the contents of which
remained private to both parties
the other man, the one in the faded black hoodie,
rested his stuffed duffel bag on the worn planked floor.
my guess is that it held the sum total of his belongings
he retrieved two books and began reading one
then muttered softly while drawing diagrams on the window
i faced the two men's profiles and
gazed like a movie-goer
while sipping tea
and nibbling my warm sugary almond croissant
the man in the plaid flannel shirt finished his egg on a bagel
all that remained on the clean white plate
was the green crown of a strawberry
the man with the duffel
wrote in black ink on a white paper napkin
while i scribbled this poem
in pencil on a brown paper bag
You kill me.
