Phase One- The area to be dug is marked off with plastic gardening tape fed through small pots to hold the tape down.
I decided to make a small (5' x 7') garden in the middle of our backyard for the birds. I ordered a solar powered birdbath. We already have two feeders on a post which birds frequently visit. After digging the first foot down, I wrote this:
digging
strains the back
lightens the soul
with every lift of the spade
i feel each of the fifty-three years that
i'll celebrate tomorrow
a network of roots
tug at the soil
like the years that try to
hold my body back
i am a strong-willed Bull
who's fight in not over
so i strengthen my grip
and push harder on the spade's edge
my knees protest
but my will is stronger because
i see past the broken clods to
the nest i am building for roots--
spring's seeds
become
summer's fragrant flowers
the bird bath will arrive on Friday
and my oval of beginnings must be ready
we all start life as
a seed
and one day
(many springs from now, i hope)
they'll be
digging
and i'll be planted in soil
like spring seeds
that become
fragrant summer flowers
Phase One complete. Phase Two? Digging deeper [sigh]
I realized after I wrote this that it fits this week's Sunday Scribblings.
