The Monster
the Monster is patient
is kind...
laughs
with molten grey eyes
cold but convincing
a steel vault
to imprison vulnerability
is not easily provoked
speaks no evil...
smiles
with tender lips
securely fastened
to obscure
the self-severed tongue
bears all things
believes all things...
sees
through a glass darkly
it's own demise
face to face
it will be revealed
knows the truth
and
eventually
the Monster fails.
It is never easy to admit your short-comings, especially to your daughter because it is then you realize you are undeniably admitting them to yourself. My mother and I were talking recently of how we and many women (and especially those of her generation) too easily take the role of Peace-Maker at All Costs. How many words do we chew, swallow and choke on to avoid conflict?
Albert Einstein said, "Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding." And to that I would add--Peace cannot be kept by silence. It is only through words that we can achieve understanding.
"It is never easy to admit your short-comings, especially to your daughter because it is then you realize you are undeniably admitting them to yourself."
I wonder if my daughters recognise what it meant to read these lines aloud to them.
I doubt it.

Hear, hear! Excellent point. And your photo of a reasonably friendly monster is nice - but indicates how easily monsters can be disguised behind pleasant faces. Wonderful post!
